"Sonja"
5 years old, born Y9
Bay Thoroughbred Mare
Stands at 16hh
Ridden by Jacey Leigh-Lanning
My way of life
Sonja has been maturing well during her time racing, and the staff have started to note key changes in her personality. Once incredibly unpredictable, Sonja is starting to become a lot more consistent in herself. Although she still has the occasional bad day, these are now rare and are usually the result of something which has happened.
Usually, Sonja is a wonderful mare to work with, being well behaved and willing to complete the tasks of her. She enjoys human companionship, especially that of the trainer, Jacey, with whom she has formed a very strong bond. However, she is most definitely not a perfect horse. She is still young, and training is still ongoing. While she is learning, her ground-manners are not always perfect and she can become headstrong if there is something she wants. It should be noted that this filly is at her happiest when outside. She loves the freedom of the pasture, she loves to be able to stretch her legs and finds great fun in galloping. However, she is starting to develop a dominant streak around other horses, her competitive nature starting to show in her everyday behaviour. It is this competitive nature and love of galloping, however, which have led to her adapting well to the track.
Where I've been
Sold to In Stride Racing when Silver Stride closed down in Year 13.
My way of running
Races over dirt and turf
Between seven and eleven furlongs
Races as a front runner or a stalker
Sonja can run as either a front runner or preceder, but will usually take up a preceder position - leaving the task of setting the pace to other horses and allowing her to save some stamina for the home stretch. She gates well, remains calm while waiting for the gates to open, and breaks well. From here, Sonja likes to take up a position behind the front runners where she will sit until her jockey gives her a sign that it is time to make their move. Here, she will display a great deal of speed and power. Pushing hard she will move up the stretch quickly and due to a high level of spirit and heart will be able to deal with any competition. Sonja listens to her jockey, and is very responsive to their commands.
In races with no front runners, Sonja is able to adapt to a front-running style. Although she can get a little excitable in this position, she will still listen to her jockey's instructions so is unlikely to go tearing off at such a pace that she will run out of steam before the end of the race. However, when she is ran as a front runner it is always best to put a distance between her and the horses behind her.
Sonja is a little on the dominant side around other horses, and has a highly competitive nature. She never gives in when she goes head to head with another horse, and will fight to the very last moment of a race. She has the heart and love of running which make a great racehorse.
